Today’s Gospel

Alas for you, Chorazin! Alas for you, Bethsaida! So many miracles have been worked in you! If the same miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would already be sitting in ashes and wearing the sackcloth of repentance. Surely for Tyre and Sidon, it will be better on the Day of Judgment than for you. And what of you, city of Capernaum? Will you be lifted up to heaven? You will be thrown down to the place of the dead.

Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me; and he who rejects me, rejects the one who sent me.”

Today’s Reflection:

Jesus directed his woe to specific cities in the Galilee region. The people in these cities witnessed Jesus’ mighty deeds yet responded poorly to the Lord’s invitation. He even compared them to Phoenician Cities. The people of Tyre and Sidon, even with their history of unrighteousness, might have repented if they had witnessed what Jesus did for Chorazin, Bethsaida, and even Capernaum.

We, too, are like Chorazin and Bethsaida. We have received the gift of faith; we believe in Jesus and see the world with the eyes of faith. Like the people of Chorazin and Bethsaida, we may have responded poorly to the Lord’s call. The Gospel invites us to check on our Christian faith. Are we still grateful for our belief? Or, like the people in the Gospel, have we taken for granted the Lord’s mighty deeds for us?   /Vulnerasti, 2023.
