Today’s Gospel

Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother’s sister Mary, who was the wife of Cleophas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw the Mother, and the disciple whom he loved, he said to the Mother, “Woman, this is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “There is your mother.” And from that moment the disciple took her to his own home.

Today’s Reflection:

Today we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. We reflect on Mary’s agony before the cross of Christ together with Mary, the wife of Clopas, Mary of Magdala, and John. As a Church, we are never alone in facing our trials and sufferings in life as when we live in communion with others.

We find ourselves today at the foot of the cross; Mary was always there at the important moments of Jesus’ life, even now in his suffering.  We find the sorrowful mother present at the foot of the cross. Jesus recognized the grieving of Mary and John and asks them to make space in their lives for one another. Jesus said to his mother, “Woman, behold your son,” and to John, his disciple, “Behold your mother”.

The Church, the assembly of a community of believers and of Christian disciples (cf. CCC 751), finds its origin at the foot of the cross. The Gospel teaches us about solidarity during suffering and sorrow, to pray with those who are grieving and in pain, to accompany and make space for one another. /Vulnerasti, 2022
