Today’s Gospel

And Jesus offered this example, “Can a blind person lead another blind person? Surely both will fall into a ditch. A disciple is not above the master; but when fully trained, he will be like the master. So why do you pay attention to the speck in your brother’s eye, while you have a log in your eye, and are not conscious of it? How can you say to your neighbor, ‘Friend, let me take this speck out of your eye,’ when you can’t remove the log in your own? You hypocrite! First remove the log from your own eye, and then you will see clearly enough to remove the speck from your neighbor’s eye.

Today’s Reflection:

When vices such as alcoholism or any form of addiction become a habit, they may lead us to two consequences: first, they deprive us of the goodness of life as one limits and easily falls into a vicious cycle and; second, they alienate us from desiring what is good for oneself and others. The Gospel rightly asks us: “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit?”

Jesus exhorts us to examine ourselves before speaking: “First take the log out of your eye and then you will see clearly…” Unfortunately, as an excuse, we point quickly to the faults of others drawing attention to them, while we hide in the dark. “Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye but do not notice the log in your eye?”  We need the courage to admit our sins and weaknesses by allowing Christ’s light to shine and his truth to speak to us.

Let us ask the merciful Lord to cast away the darkness in our souls. Let us guide and bring others to Him, the source of light, by welcoming Christ first in our life. Christ is the Physician who did not come to this world to call the righteous but sinners (cf. Mk. 2:17). As Luke’s Gospel suggests, the call to change and conversion, starts with oneself, with the help of God’s grace. /Vulnerasti, 2022
