Today’s Gospel

As the crowd increased, Jesus spoke the following words: “People of the present time are troubled people. They ask for a sign, but no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah. As Jonah became a sign for the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be a sign for this generation. The Queen of the South will rise upon Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and here, there is greater than Solomon. The people of Nineveh will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for Jonah’s preaching made them turn from their sins, and here, there is greater than Jonah.

Today’s Reflection:

Regardless of the many signs and wonders Jesus performed, people still demanded for more, but he bluntly told them that none will be given to them except the “sign of Jonah” (v. 29). The Lord recognized the hypocrisy and half-heartedness of his contemporaries. They are not willing to transform their lives and to submit themselves to Him as the One sent by God. They doubt Jesus’ being himself a sign of God’s presence in their midst – his being the concrete manifestation of the Father, his being “God-with-us” (cf. Is 7:14; 8:8; Mt 1:23). If this were clear to them, they would demonstrate sincerity and seriousness in following him. Sometimes we, too, fail to recognize God’s presence in our lives. We are blind to the many signs of His being with us. What effect would such a presence have on us? /Vulnerasti, 2022
