Today’s Gospel

No one, after lighting a lamp, covers it with a bowl or puts it under the bed; rather, he puts it on a lamp stand, so that people coming in may see the light. In the same way, there is nothing hidden that shall not be uncovered; nothing kept secret, that shall not be known clearly. Now, pay attention and listen well, for whoever produces, will be given more; but from those who do not produce, even what they seem to have will be taken away from them.”

Today’s Reflection:

Today’s reading is a clear invitation to witness to God’s Word before others. By its very nature, it would be unthinkable that his light be hidden or concealed. Light is fundamentally important.  It guides our way and dispels darkness. Take away the sun’s light and earthly life is damaged and everything is cold.

With God’s light, we are can free others from the dark night of doubt and despair; we become reflectors of His light.  In reference to John who was a burning lamp of Christ, Augustine says, “the light – it has been said – shines in the darkness, but the darkness did not welcome it. Since the darkness did not receive the light, a man’s testimony was needed.” (Sermon 342; cf. John 1:5; 5.35).

Through baptism aren’t we called like John to become lamps or witnesses of the Lord? Let us ask the His grace that our actions, choices, and words reflect the light we daily receive. May the warmth of God’s love be felt in our service and ministries.  /Vulnerasti, 2022
