Today’s Gospel

After this, Jesus went out, and noticing a tax collector named Levi, sitting in the tax-office, he said to him, “Follow me!” So Levi, leaving everything, got up and followed Jesus.

Levi gave a great feast for Jesus, and many tax collectors came to his house, and took their places at the table with the other people. Then the Pharisees and their followers complained to Jesus’ disciples, “How is it, that you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” But Jesus spoke up, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. I have not come to call the just, but sinners, to a change of heart.”

Today’s Reflection:

We have just begun our Lenten journey, and our Lord Jesus Christ, in the readings, continues to invite His disciples to follow Him for repentance and renewal. In our Gospel reading today, we read about the encounter of Jesus and Levi, who immediately left everything behind and responded to the invitation of Jesus to follow Him. As baptized Christians, may we have the courage and the availability of the tax collector to respond to the invitation of Christ. May Christ also give us a repentant heart so that we may experience the mercy of God even though we think of ourselves as unworthy of His grace and mercy. Let us always remember that Jesus did not come to call the righteous but sinners. May these comforting words of Christ be our sure hope of glory with the Father in heaven. /Vulnerasti, 2023
