Today’s Gospel

After this Jesus went out, and noticing a tax collector named Levi, sitting in the tax-office, he said to him, “Follow me!” So Levi, leaving everything, got up and followed Jesus.

Levi gave a great feast for Jesus, and many tax collectors came to his house, and took their places at the table with the other people. Then the Pharisees and their followers complained to Jesus’ disciples, “How is it that you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” But Jesus spoke up, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor, but sick people do. I have not come to call the just, but sinners to a change of heart.”

Today’s Reflection:

Life is sometimes compared to a classroom where God is our teacher, and we are His students. In this analogy, we expect that we are placed in an environment where we must do whatever it takes to at least learn and pass every hurdle, if not to slay the lessons with flying colors. We are esteemed as good students if we are able to comply with whatever is required from us. However, God doesn’t only wish to see us perform as good students in front of Him, but to become good classmates with everyone as well. He never intended to see us competing with each other. He also yearns to see us exert efforts not just for ourselves but for the entire class to appropriately pass as one, hopefully, with no one left behind. This was the reason Jesus was imparting with us in this gospel. He teaches us that no discrimination exists inside his classroom and that everyone is welcome to be His student, regardless of status or background in life.
