Gospel: Jn 16:5-11

Today’s Gospel

But now I am going to the One who sent me, and none of you asks me where I am going; instead you are overcome with grief, because of what I have said.

Believe me, it is better for you that I go away, because as long as I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go away, I will send him to you, and when he comes, he will vindicate the truth before a sinful world; and he will vindicate the paths of righteousness and justice.

What is the world’s sin, in regard to me? Disbelief. What is the path of righteousness? It is the path I walk, by which I go to the Father; and you shall see me no more. What is the path of justice? It is the path on which the prince of this world will always stand condemned.

Today’s Reflection:

In our Gospel today, Jesus uses courtroom language to describe the role of the Holy Spirit. As  “Helper” and “Advocate”, the Holy Spirit is like a lawyer who will be an advocate for believers while working on behalf of Jesus. But for those who refuse to believe in Jesus, the Holy Spirit will act as a persecutor. It is also written that He will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness or justice and judgement.

For the believers of Jesus, the Holy Spirit will give resolve in their hearts. Their consciences will be enlightened and will be marked by the signs of Christ. When we allow the Holy Spirit to work in us, the following consequences occur: we accept Christ in our lives through our faith, we try to become righteous like Him, and we reject the ruler of the world, Satan as we see the way of Christ as leading to victory. /Vulnerasti, 2022
