Today’s Gospel

At this time, Jesus went out into the hills to pray, spending the whole night in prayer with God. When day came, he called his disciples to him, and chose Twelve of them, whom he called ‘apostles’: Simon, whom he named Peter, and his brother Andrew; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; Matthew and Thomas; James son of Alpheus and Simon called the Zealot; Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who would be the traitor.

Coming down the hill with them, Jesus stood in an open plain. Many of his disciples were there, and a large crowd of people, who had come from all parts of Judea and Jerusalem, and from the coastal cities of Tyre and Sidon. They gathered to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And people troubled by unclean spirits were cured. The entire crowd tried to touch him, because of the power that went out from him and healed them all.

Today’s Reflection:

Today’s Gospel reading narrates Christ’s calling of the twelve apostles. Jesus did two things that could guide us too in our day-to-day endeavors: prayer and discernment.

We are invited to pray that the will of the heavenly Father aligns with ours and that He governs our steps and directs our paths at all times. We too are called to discern. This requires deep thought, prayer with God’s word, and consideration so that we do not find ourselves facing the consequences of a poor decision.

Let us constantly ask for God’s grace and guidance so that we become faithful followers of Christ as we are called to proclaim his good news of salvation. Like the apostles and Christ’s first disciples may we follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit in our pilgrimage to the heavenly homeland with the Father.  As we fulfil our calling or mission may the purpose, will, and voice of the living God be made manifest through our decisions, words, and actions./Vulnerasti, 2022
