Today’s Gospel

As the crowd increased, Jesus spoke the following words: “People of the present time are troubled people. They ask for a sign, but no sign will be given to them except the sign of Jonah. As Jonah became a sign for the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be a sign for this generation. The Queen of the South will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and here there is greater than Solomon. The people of Nineveh will rise up on Judgment Day with the people of these times and accuse them, for Jonah’s preaching made them turn from their sins, and here there is greater than Jonah.

Today’s Reflection:

The increase in the number of the crowd who gathered in today’s Gospel did not please Jesus. As someone who can clearly read the hearts of each person, Jesus knew that the crowd wanted to get closer to Him, but not to learn from Him. They are there either by compulsion, to witness a spectacle, to receive some healing from a miracle worker, or to merely satisfy their curiosity about this man named Jesus. However, the purpose of Jesus’ ministry is not to be popular among people nor to provide them with an exhibition that might entertain them. Jesus manifests his love, power and wisdom not to merely arouse some applause and approval. It anticipates a deeper response from our part such as love, faithfulness, commitment, conversion and improvement of the heart. In our attempt to follow Jesus, let us strive to embody this genuine form of faith rather than the type that the crowd in our story exhibited. /Vulnerasti, 2022
