Today’s Reflection
Gospel: Mt 5:17-19
June 8, 2022 | Wednesday
Do not think that I have come to annul the law and the prophets. I have not come to annul them, but to fulfill them. I tell you this: as long as heaven and earth last, not the smallest letter or dot in the law will change, until all is fulfilled. So then, whoever breaks the least important of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be the least in the kingdom of heaven. On the other hand, whoever obeys them, and teaches others to do the same, will be great in the kingdom of heaven.
Today’s Reflection:
In writing this Gospel, Matthew was trying to point out to the early Christians that the life of Jesus is not a breakaway from past Jewish traditions but that it is a continuation of all that was foretold by the prophets, that Jesus has not come to abolish the Law and the prophets but to bring them to completion. Jesus teaches us a completely new way of thinking. He teaches us that we should go beyond merely following the law. He admonished us to move beyond externals and go into our hearts. As we have our prayers and as we do acts of mortification, let us ask God to purify our minds and our intentions, and to give us more love so that we may be able to forgive more and serve our brothers and sisters in the community with love. /Vulnerasti, 2022
