Today’s Gospel

One day, Jesus was praying in a certain place; and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.” And Jesus said to them, “When you pray, say this: Father, may your name be held holy, may your kingdom come; give us, each day, the kind of bread we need, and forgive us our sins; for we also forgive all who do us wrong; and do not bring us to the test.”

Today’s Reflection:

The Lucan version of The Lord’s Prayer (Our Father), addressed foremost to our heavenly Father, contains three significant petitionary elements which are essential to Christian life: (a) sustenance, (b) forgiveness, and (c) deliverance. The first teaches us that God gives us our daily nourishment as long as we need them for our salvation. The second reminds us that if we want God to forgive us, we need to forgive others first. Finally, the third instructs us that, on our own, we cannot do anything (cf. Jn 15:5) for only God can save us from our enemies. Because prayer must be centered on God, Christians must be full of “humility” in praying The Lord’s Prayer. We are “nothing” compared to God and by approaching Him in the emptiness of our heart, constantly giving glory to His name, we can become “everything.” /Vulnerasti, 2022
