Today’s Gospel

As Jesus moved on from there, he saw a man named Matthew, at his seat in the custom-house; and he said to him, “Follow me!” And Matthew got up and followed him. Now it happened, while Jesus was at the table in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners joined Jesus and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why is it, that your master eats with sinners and tax collectors?”

When Jesus heard this, he said, “Healthy people do not need a doctor, but sick people do. Go, and find out what this means: What I want is mercy, not sacrifice. I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Today’s Reflection:

The Son of Man came to gather the lost children of God and bring them back to His fold. This is the very reason why the Son assumed human flesh, to reconcile us with the Father. Christ clearly showed this when He was still with us. His compassionate heart goes especially to those considered sinners by society. But not many understood that this is God’s way of showing mercy. Many did, on the contrary, criticize Him for being a friend to sinners. They remarked as if they know the heart and mind of God. But in reality, they did not. Only Christ can claim this because He is from the Father and the Spirit for they are one in substance. The reality is God loves us and that He seeks for us and wants us to enjoy His eternal company in the Kingdom. /Vulnerasti, 2023.
